Default AW4 converter not locking up

'95 Cherokee lockup converter fails to lockup. This has been driving me nuts for three years. The RPM's don't drop appropriately on the freeway. The overdrive works fine, but when the lockup was working properly, it dropped over 400 RPM's. I've changed the TPS, coolant sensor, neutral safety switch, brake light switch, and more, any ideas. Thanks, the fuel mileage has been suffering, along with my pocketbook.

try pulling up on the brake peddle with your foot
if it locks the converter then you need a new switch

I tried the "hold the pedal up" deal, and it didn't change. Is it possible the TV cable adjustment may have something to do with it? I installed a throttle body spacer, and was curious if that may be the problem. Thanks for your time

Yes! adjust it!

To adjust the TV cable you:
1: Push in and hold the release button
2: While holding in release button, push "conduit" in as far as it will go
3: Release button
4: Rotate throttle to WOT, some people do this with the gas pedal. Others do it from the engine compartment.
5: Hold at WOT for a few seconds, cable should ratchet out a click or two.
6: Your TV cable should now be properly adjusted, take it for a test ride.

Here is another post about it on NAXJA

does your truck come up to normal temp? If you have a 160 stat or it doesn't come up to 195 the torque converter won't lock up if the engine isn't warm enough.

I to have been dealing with this very problem.
So far I have replaced:

Adjusted the TV cable
Checked and cleaned all ground wires
Pulled up on the brake peddle

All to no Avail, and my Rig is running at 195-210 degree's
I hope someone can help us

Install the TC lockup switch, 1 spst switch, 2 wires, a couple of splice in wire pieces. Ther is a writeup for sure @ naxja, and a couple other sites, dunno about here.

Default AW4 converter not locking up

Okay, I'm back. I have tried absolutely everything. I tried pulling up on the brake pedal, nothing (I had previously replaced the brake light switch, along with the neutral safety switch). I adjusted the TV cable to no avail. The temperature comes up to normal all the time, so I don't think that could be it (around 195). At this time, it still isn't dropping into converter lockup, and the mileage is horrible. I'm hoping by re-opening this, that someone may have an idea that I haven't tried yet that might just work. Thanks, poppajeep

Have you had it scaned for codes? a failed speed sensor in the trans might cause this....You could try a stall test on the torque convertor and see if it is functioning properly.... I will bet a failed sensor.... that is pre obd11 so wouldn't give you a light. A freinds 90 did this and it was a failed sensor on the trans
Good luck!

i cant believe no one has told you to OHMS test the solenoids...there is on on the side of the valve body that only controls TC lock up.

test at the tcu plug
