ATF III != Dexron.
ATF + series is the Chrysler specification.
Dexron is the old GM spec, used by other outfits.
Mercon is the old ChryCo spec.
Type F is the old Ford spec.
AMC has never produced their own automatic transmission - they tended to use BorgWarner, some GM, and some Chrysler.
The AW4 is a Toyota design, and is spec'd for Dexron II fluid (as evidenced by the "DII" stamped into the head of the drain plug.) Don't bother using ATF +3/+4, because the friction modifiers are all wrong. You're likely to end up with clutch chatter in short order.
The AW4 doesn't seem to like synthetic fluids either, for some odd reason. Reports from the field are mixed and inconsistent.
Use Dexron II/IIE/III/V or Dexron/Mercon fluid - don't use ATF +3/+4, and reports from the field on using "Multi-Spec" fluid is mixed, so it's probably best to avoid it.
