Ok guys, so I am starting to have some issues with the AT and need some info that you might be able to help with.
The car is a 1999 XJ Sport (for what I understand) made in Venezuela, 4.0L auto with 4WD (Select track)
Image from my car, not a sample image.
Question #1 : need to ID the tranny to get filter/gasket and a change of fluid, bought used and unknown when it was last done.
- where is the tranny model tag/id?
Question #2 : fluid type
Issue : all seems to work well cold. Once warmed up, reverse start to slip/not engage. This started a few weeks ago. The car is NOT overheating.
Has new radiator. Once thing kind of strange, if I engage the 4WD (first position 4 part time or second 4 full time) the reverse seems to work better?
When is cold reverse is very strong, able to backup uphill etc.
You have an AW4. Made by Aisin/Warner. A similar transmission was used in many Toyotas as the A340 but as far as I know not all parts interchange and the casings/bellhousings are different.
I'm not sure what the issue is with the reverse gear in your case but slipping transmissions are never good. I'm sure someone with much more knowledge on the transmission than me will chime in soon.
Thanks. This allows me to order/buy filter and fluids before the job. Availability is tight here and don't want to take it apart when you don't have all you need.
