I think my transmission might be toast, but wanted to get a few opinions first.

Everything was fine until this past Sunday. I was on my way home from a town about 20 miles from my house, when my friend that was riding with me looked out the back window & noticed the old girl was smokin like crazy. The smoke was so thick ya couldn't see anything behind me, so I pulled off the road to check it. The smoke was coming from transmission fluid that was hitting the exhaust, near the bell housing.

I didn't lose any forward drive but did notice that while idling it makes a sound similar to the sound a power steering pump makes when your sitting still and turn the wheels left or right. It makes this sound in park or neutral but not in drive or reverse.

Now sometimes, when I put it in drive there is a delay of about 10 seconds before I feel it go into gear & other times nothing happens(reverse is even worse).If I try to drive it sometimes it doesn't shift , engine rpms are high and I slowly lose forward drive until its the same as being in neutral. When this happens if I put it in park, turn the ignition off and start it back up, ethier the same thing happens or it begins shifting. If it does shift it is very jerky, like the rear end is about to come out.

I've been told it could be the pump or torque converter going bad. I was planning on doing a fluid and filter change to see if that makes a difference, since I havn't done it in the 6 months I've owned it. I've checked the fluid level and it looks ok, but since I can't drive it to get the transmission up to temp, I have no way of being sure.

I just talked to my Dad, who talked to a mechanic that used to work at the local Jeep dealership. The mechanic said that the tranny is just wore out & I should replace it. That make sense, since the old girl has 313,000 miles on her and spent most of her life on a stripmine at low speeds in 4wd.

Is there a certain year range I should look for or will the tranny from say a 90 somthin up work?

Any AW4 will fit but 96 and newer are setup to mate (electrically) with an OBD2 system.

I'd look for something as close to your model year as possible.

I plan on replacing the rear main seal on the engine while the tranny is out, is there any thing else I should replace while the tranny is out?
