Default Auto trans wont stay in gear

I was driving down the road with no issues and my 86 Cherokee with the 2.8L V6 slipped out of gear. I moved the gear select and there was no response. If I shut the motor off and start her again the trans will go into gear. Ill move like ten feet and she will slip out again. I checked my fluid level and I am full. I also checked the linkages and they all move and everything still has its bolts in it. Im assuming my trans is shot. If any of you could throw some advice my way, I would greatly appreciate it.

Well I can give it a try lol. I had an issue while driving down the freeway it would keep shifting back and forth from 3 to 4. Found out the the neutral safety switch was bad, I guess I kicked it sometime and broke it. Changed it and wamo all was good. Also can try adjusting the kickdown cable. Clean your throttle position sensor or replace if bad. Test your transmission control module. Try them in that order. Hope this helps

Actually do the kickdown cable adjustment first. Quickest and easiest

Do any of you guys realize that an 86 with a 2.8 does NOT have an AW4?

How's the fluid level and condition?

The fluid level is fine. It probably wouldn't hurt to change it. It does the same thing in reverse as well.
