Hey guys there's a Guy on Craigslist that is selling a 95 xj. He says the only real issue is that auto granny isn't shifting you have to manually shift the gears.
Is this something that could be easy to fix? Or would you think it probably needs a new tranny?

I'm a nearly absolute greenhorn, just learning. There may be 3 computer controlled solenoids. Sounds possible the insides are fine and it's the stuff they stuck ON it that might be on the fritz. That said, this morning I didn't even know if I was in gear.......

Even if it was the TCU, which is highly unlikely, they're a dime a dozen at the JY.
on my '95, and it happened two or three times, but the speed sensor went kaput, and after changing it using auto parts store ones, I finally got a MOPAR one (same package, same looks), and it has been in for about 4 years. Everytime it failed, I would have to manually shift it to make it work. Hope this helps a little.

We're assuming 4.0L with AW4, correct? Later XJs have the TCU fuse in the power distribution box under the hood.
My normal answer is that if it shifts OK manually, but not in 3 or D, its an electrical issue.

It,s a 1990 4L 4 speed auto. Dont know if it's an "aw" or what. With that fuse out, starting off in drive it will slip allot. Still with it out put it in first and it's solid. Fuse in, solid in drive taking off.
So with that fused circuit not working it will feel punky taking off if it's not in first.

As far as buying one....I'm in a position with my (Sept.89)262K. Got to decide if I want to keep it up indefanently or down-grade to something newer. Kidding! What it COMES DOWN TO for me is THE LITTLE STUFF. Generally the engine and everything below the knees is not an issue that can't be handled.
It's the locks, hinges. cranks, latches, panels, rear hatch, seats. Pretty much anything the PO could reach. The bumpers have seen some action, the headliner fell, weather stripping in taters, the windshield is so pitted I, (a shameless cheap-skate), am considering changing it. That's the sort of stuff that would put me off. If it's clean and tight, at $1200 you could put a bit into it and come out OK. I paid 2k for my 90 with 140K, (for my Mom), in 02. The only tow in 10 years was when the little pin that drives the fuel pump impeller gave out. About twice This > l big!
