DO NOT use ATF4 in the trans.

ATF +3/+4 and Dexron are not the same.

However, most of the transfer cases don't care - the fluid is simply a lubricant.

NP/NVG transfer cases in general use Dexron, but can use whichever fluid your slushbox wants (the AW4 wants Dexron II/IIE/III/V, while the ChryCo boxen want ATF +3/+4.)

I dislike assuming, and you haven't filled out your sidebar profile, so I'm going to have to assume we're dealing with an XJ here (since it's in the Cherokee section,) and that you've probably got the 6-242 (seems to be the most common engine in the XJ still on the road) and probably the AW4 (autos are more common than manuals, unfortunately.)

Therefore, based on that, you'll need to keep a stock of Dexron handy for your AW4 anyhow. Just use the same stuff in your transfer case, and you'll be all right - I know from experience that the NP231 and NP242 (both transfer cases were used in the XJ) do just fine on a steady diet of Dexron.

If any of my assumptions are off, please correct me so I can revise information if necessary. It really helps if you give vehicle information straight off in the first post, so we don't have to make assumptions (which I don't like doing - even with experience, assumptions are often wrong.)

Dex/Merc III compatible for both AW4 transmission and transfer case.

Some can get by with ATF+4, but there are a number of threads of unlucky souls who have some slippage using that fluid. Do you feel lucky??

Therefore, I cannot recommend ATF+4 to anyone with an XJ. Dex/Merc III is the original fluid, works great and there is no reason to use anything else IMHO.

If you have a "4 Full Time" setting, you have the NP242. If you do not have the "4 Full Time" setting, you have the NP231.

The NP242 was used in the Limited XJ with 6-242 and AW4, and perhaps in some high-end Laredos as well. It's not terribly common.
