Bought a pioneer head unit and 4 speaker combo at wally world for $85. The speakers are 6 1/2" so I'm lookin' to see if any of you guys have any pics of 6 1/2" speakers installed and or pointers for doing it. I'm sure some modding is afoot. Thx in advance!!!

Regular 6.5" wont fit in the front doors, they are too deep. My xj came with 6.5"s all the way around(factory infinity system) so I didn't have to mod any of the holes but im guessing you probably will because most xj's came with 5.25". The rears will be easy because you just have to cut and enlarge the factory holes. The fronts will be the big issue. You will need shallow mount speakers up front because regular speakers are too deep and they will hit on the window and inner window mount.Originally Posted by nme159

I'm speaking without knowing the specifics of the XJ, but on other cars, I've just shimmed them up with some MDF. Super easy and you can glue carpet of just paint them and they pretty much blend in fine. Again, can't say for sure if this is possible on the XJ or what it would look like, but if all you need is 1/2 or so, a shim should be fine.
Open up a hole in the door panel, then mount the speaker with a spacer:

ive shoved 6x9's in the front before just buy opening up the hole. so its all possible as long as they are shallow enough
I got them all in. The doors were fine. Maybe my '91 has more room in the door panel than later models?????? Took oldies out and mounted new ones roght to removable door panels. Used some self-tapping drywall screws to go through panel and into metal. Worked out great. The rear would have been a different story if someone else hadn't done some modifications for mounting 6 1/2's before. Score for me!!! The mounting holes from the old speaker grills can still be seen, but this ain't no fasion show. Will post pics this week.
Sorry it took me so long to get these up. All went well. Plenty of room in doors. I would have had to do some cutting in rear gate had someone not already done it. Not the prettiest with the holes from the old speaker mounts, but this ain't no fashion show.
Not bad for $85!

These speakers are 6.5" (well the woofer).
Just had to do some cutting and bending back to fit them perfectly. The door is plenty deep enough.
As for placing the screws, I honestly don't remember how I got to that point lmao.
