Default alternator swap ?

'98 4.0 straight 6 -- anybody know anything bout swapping in a bigger alternator? stock is a 90A and i want to drop a 117A in . the plugs on the back are different ? any input would be great

builtnotbought89' did a build thread about putting a ZJ alt from a '97 into a Renix era jeep but Idk if that would work for you but here's the link to it maybe pm him and ask.

builtnotbought89' did a build thread about putting a ZJ alt from a '97 into a Renix era jeep but Idk if that would work for you but here's the link to it maybe pm him and ask.

Wife's grandparents' neighbors? Lmao.

There's an alt that's more amperage I think 117, its bigger you need to grind down the alt mounting bracket to fit it in. I can't remember the part number Im pretty sure the one I bought off eBay came out of a Chrysler minivan of some sorts.

Lol yea takin a road trip around Texas this week and stayin with her grandparents in Austin for a couple days.
Is the plug the same or different?

Plugs the same. You have to switch out the little plastic guard for the one off you current alt.

I would think that they would be the same. My 98 XJ Sport came stock with the 117 amp alt. according to my build sheet. But I am not 100% on the difference between the 90 amp and 117 amp.

BTW,
You may want to get yourself a copy of your build sheet. Here is the link to order it and it's free. It does come in handy.

1) Go to - Customer Assistance
2) Go to - Send us an Email
3) Fill out the form
4) In the section that asks "reason for contacting us". Just put in that you want your build sheet.
It will take anywhere from an hour to a couple days to get it.

On a separate note, Renix has the regulator in the alternator, where as 91 on is controlled by the PCM. Pretty sure anyway!

Rockauto.com sells higher output alternator's on their site under the jeep cherokee's, I was just looking at them tonight thinking about upgrading actually.

I have a 98 sport and according to the numbers in it seems to be 90A.
SummitRacing has also several alternators but pretty more expensive.
