Default Accessory Electrical Issues

Apparently the guy that owned my '92 XJ Sport had "electrical issues" and the fix they implemented was a little jumper between fuses (Headlight dimmer and turn signal i believe.) This is bad because it leaves the all the accessories on even when the car is off, and the battery is dead in less than 2 days. Well i pulled that out, the current issue is as follows:

NO power to any accessory even when key is in the ACCY or ON position.
(By accessory i mean Blowers, wipers, turnsignals, radio, etc)

the Accessories DO turn on when i turn the key backwards from OFF.

So the question is: How do I reconnect the accessories to the ACCY and ON circuits?

also, why the hell do they work when i turn the key backwards a bit??

Thanks for any help, you guys are awesome as usual!

Is the ignition switch toast? Try to run a continuity test on the ignition wires with the key in different positions ( battery off, of course). I think the switch is on the column about half way down. I hope this narrows down your search.

Scratch that. I just read your issue again. Try swapping relays that are alike, maybe one is stuck "on".

Well, i swapped relays around, no help.

New info: the engine starts fine but shuts off when i release the key from START to ON. Still no accessories.

Shall i test the continuity from the ignition switch?

That's a good place to go to, troubleshoot the ign switch.

okay, so i poked around, what is the best way to test the ignition swtich? just test for continuity on the plug on the steering column? that looks like a pain to get up there. Is there an easier way?

My seats are out right now, so that makes it easier (I got free ones from a friend who totaled his '89 )

I think the best way to troubleshoot a bad ignition switch is to unplug the harness to the ignition switch, disconnect power from the battery, and probe the wires with the key in different positions. Please keep me posted on this. Mine is an 87 and I have a few electrical gremlins myself.

Okay, I'm fiddling with it now, it looks like the ignition switch, more to come in a few.

(Having seats out makes this SO MUCH EASIER)

Fixed it!!

xjpioneer,

So what I did is it just pulled the ignition switch plugs out, and cross referenced the wire colors from here: http://puu.sh/3Xo8z.png (Thats from the wiring diagrams from the '93 FSM) and tested the leads on the Ing switch itself.

PUlled it out, behold! Accessory Electrical Issues-a7dbbll.jpg

The silly accessory switch was nice and crispy.

You could also do fuses too. I biked to autozone, grabbed the part ($15), install took 15 min, and that solved every issue i had.

In the mean time like 4 more things broke, but that will be for another day.
