All OEM related XJ specific tech. Examples, no start, general maintenance or anything that's stock.
Just picked up a 96 xj base 4.0 all stock and am finding out why this is referred to as the bastard year. I am in the process of fixing the wiring under the hood due to a mice party.... this is where the good deal part comes in. I have read that some 96 models especially xj came with and without abss. I haven't had a chance to get under and check the rear axle but found out that in my PDC there are no relays for any abss. I am assuming that this is telling me that I have a no abss model. Is this correct ?
The best way to tell is to look for an ABS module near the master cylinder. I'll see if I can find a picture, but essentially it looks like a square base with a cylindrical piece sticking out of it with several hard brake lines attached. I think it's mounted under the master cylinder.
It's probably a good thing you don't have ABS (I don't either), because it likely means you have a Chrysler 8.25" rear axle/diff instead of the weaker Dana 35.
I have ABS in a 96 XJ (ABS) Light goes off after starting vehicle so I put a code scanner That says no codes but No power to abs pump. when driving light comes back on. have tested power on all fuses and at the pump relay i have tested main wires to pump relay and it has power to there. I jumped power from the power to what i beleive is the wire that goes from relay to pump I hear pump working so i do think the relay is not working properly SO after massive search here in Australia with wreckers and every main parts shop I cannot buy this one I have been searching the net for a abs wiring diagram and all my manuals dont so here I ask any got help cheers
I've been tinkering with my 1997 Jeep Cherokee XJ for a couple of seasons now. Last month the ABS light came on during a wet drive, and I spent the weekend checking fuses and tracing wires to the pump. Turns out the power supply was flaky on my non-ABS axle setup – classic XJ quirk. Fixed it with a new relay and some careful soldering. While sorting parts I also needed a new truck bed cover. Delivery delays and spotty support made things frustrating. Checking real user experiences at Leer reviews helped me get a clearer picture before deciding how to move forward with them. It's the same story whether fixing brakes on an old Jeep or dealing with aftermarket gear – reliable info and patience save a lot of headaches.
