99 aw4 trans grind noise shifting
99 aw4 auto
Here we go again,
Google actually is terrible with this question.
Got my newly swapped engine running today. I go to move the jeep, front drive shaft in only, tc linkage Not hooked up. Np 242, I don't think it was in part time 4x4, I'll need to find what clicks are what on the case itself.
I got a buzzing/grinding noise while shifting the Trans through the gears. The noise came from Somewhere between N and park. I cycled gears twice once she was warmed up, both times grinding sound from underneath somewhere between those shift points, only in the one spot.
I stopped and checked fluid, it was low so I added while running until the stick read it was good.
I then shut everything down because I don't want to mess with this until I know what is going on.
is there any adjustment I missed when putting the shift bracket back on?
Is it from low fluid?
what should I check next So that I Don't Damage anything!!! Everything worked great before the engine swap.
thanks all!

dont quote me , I have only had these XJs 3 yrs,
but think a buzzing/whining sound can be induced if the Transfer case selector is "hung up" part way between Neutral and engaged
make sure the TX is definitely positioned in either Neutral, or 2wd
In either case, there should be no noise, your rear yolk may spin, minus driveshaft?
presumably you did not separate transfer case and transmission?
at the time of engine re-installation, it is critical any transmission spines do not get hung up, and the Torque converter tangs are lined up correctly
(usually it wont all bolt up easily if their is a problem)

After mating the engine to the trans i hooked the shifter bracket back on the trans, popped the tab onto the shifter ball thing.
what Exactly would be buzzing/ grinding? What needs to be checked? this scared the crap out of me lol.

If it's in Full-time the transfer case will make noise.

in the cab it sounds like it's by the shifter, why would full time make any noise.
what was heard is a shift point being selected accompanied by a buzz/grind. If I remember right it buzzed then Disappeared. It happened so quick from hearing it and shutting it down.

Just went out and retried this. Here's a link to what it is now, clunk P-R. I've adjusted kickdown a d added fluid before this vid.
Watch "Aw4 shifting, Park to reverse clunk" on YouTube
https://youtu.be/ISuEyxziVvI
what makes reana fluid circulate, driving or idle, both?

the fluid is pressurised by the pump any time its not in neutral, lower pressure at idle, much higher at RPM
I agree that clunk is disconcerting
what is happening with the disconnected yoke at rear of TX case when in 2wd ? ..is there any reason it shouldnt be turning in drive or reverse?
...if you cant get that happening, the next logical step may be a transmission pressure test,
might be worth examining torque convertor bolts under the access plate

I can't find any threads or video to replicate this or help diagnos these sounds.

If it clunks or bangs, either the auto trans will probably need to come out, or on a flatbed to the auto trans specialist for further diagnosis
