Default 98 Cherokee 4.0 swap

Hey guys I’ve got a 98 Cherokee that needs a new 4.0, the one that’s in it is knocking pretty bad. What years can I do a direct swap from? Or are there any year motors I can use that only need slight modification? Any info helps thanks

better yet what vehicle do you plan on getting a donor from?

the 4.0 is a 4.0, but the mounting is different for a few rigs.

if your going xj to xj an H.O. motor should be your only concern, bolt all your current parts onto it.

A 91-99 XJ, 93-98 ZJ, or a 91-95 YJ would be the best ones to get an engine from.

Sure the flexplate to torque converter bolts haven't gotten loose?

Agreed there Cruiser....that's the first thing that popped into my head when I read the OP's symptoms.
