Default 4.0 motor swap

I have a 1995 grand Cherokee with a bad 4.0. Can I use a 4.0 from a 1989 cherokee?

With enough time and enough money, you can do anything to anything.

That said, it would be easier to do if you had an engine and related parts from '91 and up.

If your GC is like an XJ, 91-96 should be pretty good. Ideally, the same year model would be best.

I wouldn't use the 89, one its head is more restricted. Also if I'm not mistaken the 89 is pre HO.

The 89 was just almost free. That was why I wondered if it would fit. I have been able to find 94and 95 4.0's in the 4300 to $500 range. Are there markings or numbers on the transmission and transfer case so i know what I have? It is an automatic. I believe full time 4wheel drive or maybe it is calle all wheel drive as there is only 4h, n, and 4l on shifter on transfer case.
