96 XJ running on 4 cyls help
ok, im gonna try and give as much info in the right order as i can.
i got this thing 2 weeks ago and am just getting to work on it. when i bought it, the firing order was set up wrong by the PO.
yesterday i fired it up and noticed it is running sorta weak. not much power at all, idles like a tractor. so i start messing with it, ended up pulling the wiring harness plugs to the fuel injectors, noticeable idle quality decrease when i pulled all injector plugs except 3rd, and 4th, 3rd there is pretty much zero change, and 4th its minimal at best.
SO, today i swapped the injectors with ford 19#'s from my mustang, these were in my car about a year ago and were fine. put it all back together, same issue, 3rd and 4th are not effecting idle when they are pulled off. this is the only way i have checked to see if the injectors are bad, could i be overlooking something? debris in the intake maybe? the engine seems pretty clean, but idk.
I checked for spark, good
Checked compression by pulling the plugs and turning it over, compared to cylinder #1, cylinders 3 and 4 seem fine.
Checked voltage at the injector plugs. 13.4 VDC
Checked firing order, seems to be right following the FO on the intake and my Haynes
Checked the cap and rotor, seem to be in good shape, although they havent been replaced since i bought it.
NEW PARTS:
plugs
wires
injectors
QUESTION: how does the distributer work on these things? could i be a tooth off? should i try putting it to TDC and stabbing the dist? timing? are there any stupid sensors on these things that could be causing this? maybe a cam position sensor? tps?
TO BE CONSIDERED: i do have a check engine light but i believe it is because my O2 sensor is unplugged as the truck is running on straight pipe. i dont think this could be causing this but maybe im wrong? i dont recall the CEL being on before i cut the cat off but i may have overlooked it.
im totally new to working on anything except 5.0 mustangs and 6.0 powerjokes, so if somebody could point me in the right direction i would appreciate it, im sure its gotta be something really dumb. thanks!

ooohhh man i had the same problem last week. i changed the plugs and everything connected to them. i noticed there was an oil leak coming from the valve cover gasket so i went to change it out. and in my travels i noticed that 2 of my push rods were out of the rocker arms. i pulled them out to find that they were in an "S" shape. i swapped them fo new ones and wow the jeep ran brand new. so just give it a shot and let me know how it goes.
