96 XJ charging issue
Ok heres the story. I took my 96 XJ with the 4L I6 off roading over the weekend. After we were done and got back on the road the GEN light came on and it was only at 11v. I got it home, checked all the terminals and battery, all ok. I decided to replace the alternator... replaced it and still the exact same voltage as the old one, about 11-12v... I had a brand new battery in there too now by the way so that is out of the equation. What is the black 2 prong connector that has 2 7mm nuts that secure the prongs to the alternator and has like 2 grounding straps on it as well? Im out of ideas guys, any help would be great! Thanks

sounds like the alternater isint receiving a signal. Follow the wires from it make sure no wires are broken. I had the same problem and figure my alternater was toast. replaced it and same problem. I found my problem were the plug go's in the firewall. I took it apart and cleaned up the connectors and it worked after that.
I had the same thing happen on my 92 XJ. Replaced the alternator and no good. Checked the wires and they were fine. Turned out to be the computer interestingly enough. Expensive fix, but as soon as I plugged in the new computer it went back to charging normally.
Wow I really hope its not the ECU and I'll double check the connections tonight. Are all of the alternators on the XJ's internally regulated? If I dont figure something out this weekend Im gonna be forced to take it to a repair shop
