96 cluster swap help!!!!
I Have a 96 4.0 i did cluster swap on and there is no sender for temp gauge at all. I had the jack hole light before but no sender. I am looking L/R of head and there is no hole drilled for it. The wire is there. So how would the light ever have worked and how do I install sender? Do the old cut the hose and pipe trick????I pulled sender from doner so I know where it is at.

At the rear drivers side of the head is the stock sender, you will need to replace this sender with a sender for a cluster with a gauge. It is a simple swap, and you definitely have one or else you would have coolant coming out of the hole where the sender goes.
Your sender for the dummy light should have a white connector, the replacement sender for the temp gauge will have a black connector.

You stated that you don't have a sender, now you state that you have the white connector. Do you have a sender on the rear drivers side of the head or don't you?
The sender with the white head is what you need to replace, with a sender with a black connector.

The part is called "Temp Sending Unit w/ Temp Gauge", you should be able to pick it up at you local dealership or NAPA for roughly $20. Make sure you get the temperature SENDER, not temperature SENSOR. The sensor is located in the thermostat housing on the front of the engine.
Do not try to get it from AutoZone they only have the temp sender for Cherokee's with the idiot light (white connector)....I found out the hard way.

Actually, see if there is a brass plug or brass screw with white plastic in the middle. The head of the old sender may have snapped off, check the connector and see if the other part of the sender is in the connector you see.

The plug is hanging from the firewall. The spot in the head is smooth and flat and is not broke off. I am a master tech and know what im looking at. As soon as I can I will post a pic. What I want to know is has anyone else ran into this?

I've got a 96, had both the idiot light and swapped for the gauge type. It's on the driver's rear, look real close to the valve cover, I actually had to pull the valve cover to get a socket on mine. If it really doesn't have one, drill it or relocate it. I've seen them y'ed out of the temp sensor port (thermo housing) with brass fittings from home depot, if you take that route figure it will read 10 degrees below the real temp.

It won't let me upload the picture cuz I edited it and made it too big. Would be on the bottom left of the picture you uploaded, but I think it is almost on the edge of the intake manifold not actually the head. Mine had a broken off plug in it originally and I wouldn't have seen it behind the wires if I hadn't looked one last time. If the plug is broken like mine was, it might just be a a little piece of metal sticking out that looks like it belongs there but really doesn't. Look very closely in that area and let me know what you find.
