You might maybe check the "TV", (kickdown cable) at the throttle linkage. There is a process, but I just adjust mine with about no play. (there is a button right on top that frees the housing to adjust) Don't know if that could to that, but it's something to check/adjust anyway.

The TPS sends info to the TCU for shifting. If it acts up more maybe consider a new TPS.

If your mounts are shot you might have moved the whole engine/trans towing in low. On mine that affects my Transfer case linkage....I think the trans has a cable though. (Not sure there).

what D was referring to, you can find by doing a search on here for a thread called "free quick fix", has the pictures to go with it.
To differentiate between mechanical and electrical issue with transmission problems (for future reference) , you can try and shift manually through the gears. If this works fine, your problem is likely in the electrical section of things (not the mechanical)...

You may have a solenoid that's binding when it gets hot. Only happened when you were towing, no?

You might have put the transfer case in a bind.

You can back up about 20 feet after shifting to 2WD to make sure front hubs are unlocked.
