I have been having serious problems with my alternator not charging my battery, I've decided to replace it but I read that different year XJ's require you to do different things. I have a 1992 cherokee laredo and was wondering what the easiest way to replace the alternator is? Remove the battery and battery holder? Go from underneath the jeep? I can't seem to find any write-up's or previous threads about this.
Thanks in advance.

i removed the front bumper for easier access to the bolts and then took it out from the bottom. i also found it helpful to take off the alternator and bracket, and disconnect the wires before removing any bolts. i just did this 2 days ago and it took me about an hour with a trip to the JY to pick up a used alternator

no don't take off the ac, our engines are damn near identical just OBD1 for you and OBD2 for me. you should have a denso, so you need a 7mm socket and a 10mm one, and obviously don't forget belt tensioner loosened and serpentine belt removed. it's a very easy job and only takes a hand full of tools

Also you do not need to take off you bumper. That is just more work that you don't need to do.
I forgot to add. Before you replace the alternator have it bench tested. Also take your battery with you and have a load test done on it too.
Let us know what you find
Good Luck!

I would suggest considering the minor additional cost of new cables and GOOD battery terminal connectors. I actually order my battery cables and connectors and make my own from RJM Injection Tech. The crappy factory cables have burned me and most of the ones in the stores are almost as bad.
