Hey guys, this is my first post here. I've been prowling around for some time and have found quite a few posts that have answered many of my questions, but none that seem to have covered a new issue with my Jeep.
To help you guys out, here's some basic info about my car: It's a '91 XJ, 4.0 H.O., AW4 transmission (30-43LE to be specific), 2WD. It was my step-dad's before it was mine, and he had owned it for exactly a year (to the day) before I bought it from him. I think it's in moderately decent shape.
So, about 3 months ago, the torque converter went out on me. We had both known that it was going out, but since I new little about transmissions at the time, I didn't understand the general importance of fixing it. Well, I was driving to work one morning, and the thing wouldn't move. Somehow I got it out onto the highway and couldn't get above 20 mph. Towed it back to my parents' house and stored it in the garage, working to get the tranny out of it. I got it out and was prepared to get a new torque converter for it, however, my step-dad found a '94 XJ with a new (rebuilt, I think, although that was a few months ago and I'm not entirely certain) transmission in it. I spend a few months working to put it in after work, and a few weeks ago (around the 12th) I finally got it working, however, I have an issue: It doesn't shift right. When the TCU is plugged in, it only goes into 1st and 3rd gear, and it jumps rather harshly between the two. At first I thought it was the TV cable not being adjusted properly, so I looked up how to adjust it and did just that; nothing changed. Not too long after that, I unplugged the TCU and tested out the gears, just to make sure that the transmission wasn't bad. It shifts perfectly and into 1st, 3rd, and 4th, just as it should. Eventually, I decided to test the TCU, so I got the other from the '94 and plugged it in, but it was doing the same thing: only 1st and 3rd. I've read that it isn't common for the TCU's to go out, and for 2 to go out and do the same thing, to me, seems uncommon, but I don't know too much about this and am going only on what research I have done.
The past few weeks went by and I've just been shifting it manually since it is my only car and my DD, and it has been driving just fine. I did some more research and came across testing the TPS, since I heard that that could cause shifting issues. I tested the ohmage on the TPS and it was smooth with no dips, although I didn't check the voltage to see if it was in the proper range (I tested it with an analogue multimeter, too, to make sure I picked up any dips if there were any).
At this moment, I don't know what is causing my transmission to not shift properly. The fluid level is alright, the TPS seems to work, the TCU seems to work (I'm still eyeing it rather suspiciously, though). My step-dad says it may be the TV cable, but I don't know how to test if that is working properly. Could there be a sensor I need to check and haven't that could be causing this issue? I'm fine driving it manually for the moment, but it is a pain in the butt sometimes (love stick shifts, but driving an automatic manually feels weird to me) and I can't imagine it is good for the longevity of the tranny.
Any and all help is appreciated in advance. Thank you!

Any help? I've recently bought a new, more reliable car as my DD, but I'm still trying to figure out the Jeep. I haven't had the chance to look at it lately, bit I still would like to fix it up and get it running properly again.

Thank you. I'll try that out. I have another TPS on the parts Jeep (the '94 I took the transmission out of) and I'll try that out. If anything, I'll just buy a new one and see what that does. I'll be reporting back (perhaps this weekend. I have nothing to do) on how it does.

Thank you. I looked and the TPS I have is new (replaced last October & forgot...), and I can't find the TCU fuse. It doesn't seem to be in that location for me. I have a 91, would that make a difference? I haven't found any information yet about it being in a different location.

I thought 91 still had the fuse.
Unplug the tCU and blow it all out with electronics cleaner.

That's what I'm most afraid of. I just got this transmission off my parts Jeep, and the guy I bought it from said it was new/rebuilt/refurbished (I can't remember exactly, that was back in October of last year), so I would hope it isn't one of the solenoids. I'm going to try cleaning and checking contacts some time this week (weekdays are always busy for me), along with back probing to see what the TCU is telling the transmission. I'll let you guys know what I do and how it turns out within the next few days or so.

Yeah I agree they aren't that hard. I've removed them on the original transmission when I took it out and started looking in it. I would just like to avoid going under and opening up the transmission again. If I have to then so be it, I will, but I'm just trying to cover all the bases before I resort to that.

Sorry I haven't gotten back yet. My job has gotten busy this week and I haven't had much time to do anything else. I think I've heard or seen this before somewhere, but how can you check the solenoids without taking them out?
