Default 88 Cherokee Runs only in start position

I have an 88 Cherokee and after replacing the ECU, distributor cap, ignition module, ignition switch, stator, fuel pump relay, starter relay, and a crank sensor and it still WILL ONLY RUN IN THE START POSITION... Runs good as hell but being in the start position the starter wont cut off. ANY IDEAS???? I AM LOST AND CONFUSED!

Ballast resistor. Cream colored resistor on the fenderwell.

By design, the ballast resistor is "bypassed" when the key is in the full to the right START position. So if the ballast resistor is shot, the
engine will run. But when you release the key, the ballast resistor is back in circuit and will stop fuel delivery and kill the engine.

Try bypassing that resistor with a small piece of wire. It is absolutely safe to do so. Later models don't even have a ballast resistor. It is only
there to reduce noise on the fuel pump circuit.

If bypassing it allows the engine to continue to run, you can either leave it bypassed or you can buy another resistor for about $3.00.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

I don't mean to hijack, one quick question. No ASD relay on a Renix Jeep? Correct?

Correct. Mr Walker offers sound advice.

Freegdr sounds like he's had a few beers or something. LOL.
