I hear talk of these grommets, but I do not know what they are. I removed my valve cover today to repair a major valve cover leak; (I can be assured that the top half my engine will never rust!) it is a Renix 6 cylinder, and I saw no grommets around the bolts or any where else. I did notice that the bolt holes in the valve cover are oblong shaped, and not round. What do i need to buy and what do they do and where do they go?
There are no "grommets" for the cover bolts. Get a good gasket (not those cheap cork ones). Some of them have sleeves in the gasket holes to prevent over tightening. I used the Felt-pro one on my '88.
The cast covers have semi-circle ridges to prevent over-squashing the gasket.
The vacuum harness that attaches to the front of the valve cover and includes the grommet/fitting, and is called the front harness, is Napa part number BK 715-1367 or is a Dorman 46003.
The vacuum harness that is closest to the air cleaner, EGR etc, and is called the rear harness, is Napa part number BK 715-1366 or is a Dorman 46004.
The tube from the rear of the valve cover to the intake manifold is part number BK 715-1365 or Dorman 46005 and comes with the valve cover grommet.
The Throttle Body to MAP hose is no longer available. Click HERE to access a fix for that.

The grommets are the rubber bushings in the top of the cover where the vacuum and vent line go.
I'll second or third using the more expensive blue FelPro valve cover gasket. It's much better than the cheap cork one that tends to fall apart and weep oil.
