Has anyone ever used the slots in the top of the roof bars to mount stuff?

Has anyone ever used the slots in the top of the roof bars to mount stuff?
I'm asking because I need to move a bicycle on a rack and it comes with the mounts for slotted roof bars but they're 20mm square. Is it possible to pop the plastic ends off the stock XJ roof bars to slide these things in from the side? I'm asking because I know that if I investigate I'll rip them off but break them...
