'84 4cyl. upgrades?
I'm sure this has been asked, but I can't seem to find this info. anywhere. I have an 84 carb'ed 2.5L "iron duke" that I bought not long ago with 13,000 original miles (with a plow). Anyway I found that from all that sitting it has a leaky fuel tank, able to hold only 3-4 gallons. Here's my question: since I'll be taking done the tank, how much more work is it to put a tank with an electric pump, then switch to TBI, the thing already has a return fuel line. Am I dreaming that this won't be too hard or is alot of wire splicing etc. I'm hoping to get better cold (-30 degree) starts ,1 or 2 mpg's, and 10 more ponies. Anybody done this? Thanks for the input.

It could probably work if you could find a later 1st gen S10 with the iron duke to ****** everything off of. I think my old 88 S10 was TBI Duke

the Iron Duke was never offered in the jeep cherokee
you have the simple 4 cylinder 2.5 liter amc motor with a gmc 60 degree bellhousing.
to convert it to TBI, you need another entire cherokee from 1986 to 1991 for an easy conversion, and swap the ENTIRE wiring harness including the interior harnesses in plus all sensors, switches, gauge cluster, etc.
The swap is more than your time is worth...I suggest rebuilding the carb, or finding a compatible holley or webber carb and just leaving it be other than that. you can still pull 21mpg out of it (without the plow mounted)
is this a tan 2 door? my buddy was going to buy one with the exact same stats as yours.

^+1...I have an 85 with the same engine. Nothing you can do to these little 4bangers but keep up on maintenance and not completely beat the crap out of it. I have searched high and low to find ANYTHING I could do to it...but I came up with squat.

I have found a little to mess with the ignition and different carb, but I am still researching it. You should be able to eliminate the ECM and electronic carb by doing the 'Nutter Bypass'...but again, still researching it.

JeepCoMJ, thanks for piping up and setting this guy straight. I didn't the "Iron Duke" was ever offered in an XJ, either but, wasn't sure. The last Iron Duke I saw in a Jeep was in a buddie's old CJ5. This sucker was simple and bullet proof. It had a header and 4BBl Holley carb. on it. Bad Assed as far as 4 bangers go.
