Default 5 speed help. PLEASE.

Ok yall. I tried to help my Father. I GAVE him one of my XJs. A 95 2 dr 5speed. He had to drive from Delaware to the top of Tenessee. It didnt make it. I wasnt driving, so this is 2nd hand info. The problem happened on an incline. The motor reved up while the trans didnt grab. he was in 5th so he dropped to 4th then drove 15-20 miles to the rest area. When I purchased the XJ it had $1700 in repairs done. One of the Repairs was the clutch pack. The trans seemed to pop out of 4th gear when I owned it. Linkage adj? Did they do it wrong? Is it an AX15 or AX5? The "work" was don recently, past year. Any thoughts? It will engage all gears, but wont move. Please help this fellow Jeeper. Is it possible to install the clutch wrong? Also could there be linkage adjustment issues?

ok, where do you feel the clutch engage (when letting the pedal out) if it is about 1/4 the way until your foots off the pedal, you have a bad clutch.

IF when you push on the pedal to disengage the clutch and you feel sponginess, you simply have air in the system and that will keep the clutch from disengaging, causing it to not go in gear. This will also kill a clutch in a couple thousand miles as you described.

The popping out of gear issue is probably the syncro rings are shot. Check by driving down the road and while its in suspected gear, let of the gas abruptly and then tap the accelerator with some force, do this several times. This shocks the drive line and if the syncros are bad they will disengage the cone and the sleeve will slide back and your revs will fly up as though you disengaged the clutch.

That is great help. Thank you. The air in the air in the system sounds like a tricky problem to diagnose. He did see fluid, or at least smelled it. I have a bad feeling that after the motor and clutch replacement these guys shouldve been fired. It didnt make 5,000 miles between them fixing it and its failure. So, locate any air issues, and replace the clutch again? What about clutch linkage adjustment issues? Thanks so much.

no, the clutch may still have survived. Take it to a GOOD shop and have them bleed the clutch system. If problems persist, inspect and replace clutch. If clutch still good when inspected, replace tranny.

I'm having a little trouble with my AX-15. The clutch makes a long squeak on the way down, and there's a slight pop after shifting up, during the release of the clutch on the up stroke. It only pops when there's a bit of torque going through, like the engine is revved a little higher than it needs to be for the next gear. Any suggestions?
