Corrections from previous post,it appears that in 91 the aw4 was upgraded to 23 spline, but the manuals have always been 23 spline so you should not have an issue, got info from internet search for ax-15 spline count.
This assumes your swapping for the same trany,ax15 for ax-15,for example.
because the other manuals were 21 spline.
aw4 autos were upgraded in 91 to 23 spline from what I have read.

You could have an ax15 in the 89,the 93 is almost certain to be an ax15,the ax5 and dreaded peugeot are not compatible, you will need to look at yours to make sure. I would just swpa the entire trany and xfer case from the 89 to make sure. If the 89 is not an ax15 you are taking a huge step backwards in reliability, unless you have to have it right away I would hold out for an ax15,but check first.
89 is the first year for the ax15 in xjs,but the other two were used alot still also.

Do you hear banjos?
My 89 had the BA-10 Peugeot tranny in it. There is a seam running up the length of it in the middle, pretty easy to spot. FWIW, I never had one issue with mine, and wheeled that crap out of it. I had heard the same thing, so was kinda waiting for it to go, but it held up great. It was honestly one of the smoothest shifting trannys I have ever driven. FYI, I was running 33" tires and stock gears throughout the time I owned it.
