Default 4Wheel engagement

I have 2 questions. I just bought a 1989 cherokee sport. The person I bought it from said that the MAP sensor was bad. He had it unplugged from the intake. It ran but was hard to start and could not use full throttle. I bought it and went to fill the tank and it died. Cannot re start. does this sound like the MAP sensor, vacuum problem? Also the Sport will only move in 4low. If you select 2wd it goes then sounds like it pops out of gear making a ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ sound. Is this an adjustment problem or is the Diff gears bad??? New to Cherokee's so thank you in advance.

sounds like t case. does it move in 4 hi? the zzzzz isn't out of the rear end is it. maybe have someone listen to where the noise is. i can't imagine the rear ring and pinion are completly blown apart and not engaging, its possible but that would be extreme. good luck, let us know how it goes.

It only moves in 4 LO. If you put it in 4 HI it immediatedly makes the ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ sound. If you put it in 2 HI it will run until it hits a bump then the ZZZZZZZZZZZ sound right below the selector handle.

Tucson Arizona. It is not really binding. It sounds like gears are not ligning up. A ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ sound. Not meshing.

Sounds like a range selector linkage adjustment problem to me....

yup, sounds like a linkage problem.
get underneath with the t-case in 4lo and loosen the adjuster on the main linkage bar. then go inside and pull the 4wd lever all the way down into the 4lo position.
this should line up the shifter with your already engaged 4lo. then get under it again and tighten that adjuster back up.

then test it out.

if that doesn't work, get back under it with the lever in 4lo again and adjust the lever inside forward a bit.

it may take a bit of trial and error, but you should get it at some point.

if that doesn't work, it may be the chain or gears inside the case and you'll have to swap out cases.

oh, and plug that map sensor back in. he may of unplugged it cause it was bad, you might need a replacement....
