No Crank No Start
i own a 1997 ZJ, i have replaced the engine with an 80's model cherokee AMC inline 4.0. i had to replace the Pick Up Coil for it to run about 2 weeks ago. But the other day i went to Walmart and came back out to the jeep.
It started up but a really bad spudder, then it shut off. so i tried again and the same thing. and now its turning over but no start. so i started tinkering at it hoping its a loose wire, checked all the fuses under the hood including ignition fuse. try and crank it again now the starter wont engage!!!, i replaced the starting relay and still nothing. get down to the starter with a hammer and rub the positive and negative together and it just spins not throwing the gear out and catching. replaced the starter and it still wont engage. got it towed home, i did a computer reset and made sure it wasn't my neutral safety switch. still nothing.....Im replacing the Crank shaft position sensor when i get paid friday and hope thats the problem... I need some advise.

Old fart with a wrench
Welcome to CF!
The only thing the CPS basically does is tell the PCM the crankshaft is, in fact, turning. It has nothing to do with starter engagement. It's the starter solenoid that throws the gear out. Did the new starter come complete with a solenoid or did you use your old one?
