Had some snow recently, and I've been running in 4FT for a couple days. No problems, I'm just wondering what the difference actually is between 4FT and 4PT. Also, is there any reason not to run in 4FT all the time?

Hello my friend I´m from Brazil and I just buy my firt xj, but I think that I can answer your question. You are right, but if you want I think that you can run in 4FT all the time, but spends more tires and gas (I´ve just ask it in other topic).
Here in Brazil is very common run 4FT all the time (with the NP 242).

4Hi/Lo locks the front and rear diffs together.

Correction - Part Time 4hi/4lo locks the front and rear diffs together and neither should ever be used on pavement. Only use part time 4wd (hi or lo) when conditions will allow for the tires to slip.

Full time 4hi can be used on pavement. The only downsides to using it all times are greater fuel consumption and wear on the parts. It's perfectly fine to run in Full Time 4hi all the time.

As others mentioned, while it is fine and no issue to run in "fulltime" with the selec-trac 242 case, there is no good reason to do so if you are on continual dry pavement.

More wear and tear on your parts and a bit of reduced gas mileage.

2wd for good roads is best for your Jeep and your pocketbook.

What physically happens differently inside the transfer case between part time and full time? Just something I've been curious about for awhile. I assume that the transfer case some how allows slippage internally between the front and rear diffs but how?

So there's a differential in the (NP242) T case? This makes sense now.
