4 wheel drive part time vs full time?
#47
Ok so I tried it again last night when I got home. This time I put it in N and shifted it into part time and it worked like you all said by having both the front and rear driving at the same time. So then I was moving and shifted it into 4 full time and that worked also. I then shifted it back into part time while moving and it worked also. I can only gather that maybe when I was doing this in the morning that it was not fully engaged into part time or something since everything seems to be good now.
thanks for all of your help with this

I am new to the part time/full time 4x4. Everything I have owned or worked on has never had this. They have all had 2H, 4H and 4L, and I had an old Chevy that also had 2L. So basically the Jeeps with Full time work just like an open rear, and the wheel with the least resistance will spin. So what is the point of having the full time? Seems that you would have no benefit from it, with one wheel spinning, and you still can't move. Where is the tag on the transfer case? I need to go out and look at mine and see which it is. It's a 2000 XJ, no idea which Transfer case. Will have to look at the shifter and see what's listed. Just got it, and working on the engine, so I haven't even been able to drive it yet.
Thanks....RR

I am also new but the way I understand Is all four wheels pull till one loses traction. So really full time would only benefit in slick surfaces suck as ice or snow but four part time is going to give you the best performance in any case it will just be harder on think and you won't want to run in hard surfaces. It's really kinda hard to explain.

NP231 is Parttime. NP242 is Fulltime. Tag is right near the fill and drain plugs.
The only time with Fulltime that you would have an issue with all the power going to one wheel is if it were airborne.
The nice thing about Fulltime is that you can leave it engaged while driving over different surfaces. Like from snow to dry roads, muddy to paved roads ets. Also nice on dirt roads if you need to make an emergency maneuver.
