so on my 231 when I go into 4 lo or high which can be used "full time" I know I have a primarly part time t-case but I have a full time light that comes on occasionally. When I was on mt aetna a few weeks ago I was going up the trail which was basically just dirt with some decent rocks in part time and I had zero problems, but since winter is coming up I need to figure out how to get into 4x4 full time to cruise the snowy streets.

ok so i have tried the part time 4 and it seems like only the back wheels are spining when i do this. when i use the 4 high all the wheels kick in and pull me through the snow. so is this telling me that my part time is not working corrrect and i should look into what happened. also why did they make it so you have to go past part time 4 to get to 4 high. i would think they would put it the other way so that way when i need to shift to 4 high i can just pull the lever and be in it instead of having to go through part time to get to the 4 high.
thanks for any help on this

Thanks for your post.
We’re here to help but you must understand that all Jeeps are not the same.
In order for us to give you more accurate advice and help, we must know the following, as applicable, along with detailed information as to the symptoms/problems etc:
Year
Model
Engine
Transmission
Transfer case
Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual. The suggestions in ITALICS are mine.
"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off.
4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".
To shift out of 4L, shift the transmission into neutral with the vehicle stopped, shift the transfer case lever to 2H, then to D if you have an automatic, or into first gear with a manual, and continue on.

1999 jeep XJ Limited all stock. i have many other 4x4 vehicles and understand the shifting but if you are not supposed to use the part time except off road then why do i have to shift through it to get to 4H. that is what bothers me and also today we had snow covered roads and i put in in part time expecting it to be really good traction and all that happened was my back tire was spinning and i was not going anywhrere, so i shifted it into 4H and it took right off then. this makes me think that my part time is not working correct. i recently bought this jeep and have really never used the 4wd yet since we just got our first snow since having it. is it possible that my part time is not working correct and that the rest of the transfer case is working just fine?
thanks

Don't be shy when shifting it. Use the method described in my first post.
Have you ever checked the lube level and condition in the transfer case?
FWIW, passing through Part-Time into full time is no big deal.

So in ft only one of the four wheels (the one with least traction) rather it be on front or back must spin where as pt two of the four wheels must spin one on front and one on back. Is this correct? I'm also trying to figure this out also and that is what I have gathered.
