Yes I decided to come back to the discussion, for one reason. This is what I was saying, that it can be done just fine. I made no remark that this is the best way to have it, just said it will work just fine, which is what the original question was. I have only had my cherokee for 3 months. With the economy the way it is I cant afford the luxury of new gears. You can run longer then most are saying, but yeah its not ideal. Ideal is making 3 figures and being able to afford to build the best XJ out there. I still believe that some of there info is misleading, just like many commented on. I think there is 2 sides here. One side is do it there way, the other is do it your way......I guess thats the wonderful thing about America, an opinion whether its wright or wrong.
P.S. I apologize if I made anyone angry in my posts, but I hold true to what I said.

Since this discussion is going on I am curious as well to how much this stuff is going to run me when it comes time to change gears.

what Rpms are you guys seeing on the highway with 33's 4.56 gears and the autotrans? how about fuel milage?

i'm gonna buy a needle gauge and some marking compound and do my own gears. i've never done them before, but believe i can do a good enough job.
with the money i'll save, i can buy the lockers to go in them. those i've done a few times.

It varies for me since there are allot of hills but its well under 3000 more like 2500 or so, I drive in town 90% of the day and my miles are around 240 a tank. I also am letting my XJ warm up for quite a few minutes in the morning.Originally Posted by 98 JeepJeep

Of course its going to be different with a manual.....that I dont have experience with.
I gotta agree with this post..mines a auto and it still has plenty of pep even at hiway speeds and on hills...... if you live in a really hilly state things may be different.Originally Posted by fivendime
You guys are misleading him big time. You can drive around just fine with 33's and 3.55 gears no problem. I do it on my daily driver. It still pulls hard enough to run against the little Honda cars from a stop light. Top end speed is good for cruising. Low end suffers a little but these motors compensate for that. I rarely use 1-2, 3rd for most driving and OD for freeway. Maybe its the HO that helps a little, or the lower mileage motor that I have perhaps. I would like to have different gears but, stock is perfectly fine for now.Of course its going to be different with a manual.....that I dont have experience with.

I was running stock(3.55) gears and 33x12.5 it was not to bad in the city but on the high way it was BAD.......... It would shift in and out of OD all the time i would just keep it in D and it was ok.......
I now have 4.56 and it is lots better

Yeah I stay in D almost all the time. It will tend to hunt for the right gear if in OD and in town. I cant stand that.Originally Posted by bdavid

re gear when you can afford to get great power and crawling is boost.....fuel ecomony ill go back up...and you will be happy...but stock will be sufficient for now un less you already have problems with drive train...if your jeep has a woe out trans, or drivetrain..youll proly run higher risk of "tearin up everthing these guys have been promisin you will break. i ran 34s and they were boggers at that aggressive tires put more strain than reg ats or streets, i ran em for a year and had no issues whatsoever only downside was no pull on street from stop took lots o power away but off road was fine because 4hi was good. but 4low was great with the boggers, re gearing is best choice but if money is tight and your like me and dont really care about breakin stuff my jeep is just my toy and dd sometimes...i have two trucks so no biggie if shes down and out...lol how bout you professional genuis'es not be so damn bias....let him know stock will work just not perform to factory specs when you add the wieght and drag from bigg tires.... these guys are right you NEED to re gear BUT you dont HAVE to. my opinion and thats all i have...if you agree fine if not keep it to yourself because im not going to be persuaded to belive something that ive alread experienced differently...now watch ill tear my trans up when i put the 33s on my nex xj... lol
