Not all lockers are the same though. Lunchbox lockers are better for offload only. There are some Detroit lockers that are good for street and won't grind as much

Incorrect, I've installed 4 PowerTrax No-Slip "lunchbox lockers" in various vehicles including the XJ.....no ratcheting/clicking noise in turns on/off pavement....virtually as invisible as a lsd but way more traction.

I'd find a Jeep with the NP242 though the NP231 is better then nothing at all.

If you do get a 4x2, i'd totally get a locker, especially because your going to an area with a lot of snow. Will lessen your chances of getting stuck on the street and allow you better control.
Pick up some snow tires as well for the added safety and traction during the winter months. They make a HUGE difference.

I wish my truck had a locker. I've been in so many situations where a locker would have gotten me unstuck, its just stupid.

I still got my current jeep but i have no idea what transfer case it has hahaha never bothered checking, and the jeep was just a thought, the dealer wants to much for it, they want 1200 and its a 99 with 205k, no stero, decent tires, and was wrecked and just replaced the wrecked parts, ill check it out tomorrow to find out how bad...i dont want to get if it will constantly get stuck but if i could get it cheap enough i still might try..

Any vehicle can/will get stuck.....it's not a matter of if, rather when.

If you have a 4WD Full Time option on the 4x4 gear lever, you got the NP242. If a Full Time option is not there, you got the NP231.

I have a '98 4x4 XJ. I just got a price from OK FWD in Stewartsville,NJ for a Power Trax for my 8.25-29spline for $415. I guess I could search to see if there is one cheaper, but I drive by there everyday. Plus they have good service, and went to school with the owner.

That price is excellent for a Ptrax No-Slip.
