2wd and Rear Locker
A 2WD vehicle with a locking rear differential can go quite a few places and can even go places that a 4WD might get stuck in. I got a 4WD 3/4tr ton GM pickup with open diffs stuck on a snow packed dirt road once that a locking diff 2WD would have gone right through. There are of course situations where a 4WD with open diffs would be superior to a 2WD with a locker.
However, if you had a 2WD high clearance vehicle, adding a locking diff would be a smart move.

Watch the video and know that the installation can done in a few hours in your driveway (lunchbox locker). If u don't like the increase in traction.....sell it. My bet is, the 1st time u stomp it (locker installed), this big ol' chit eatin' grin appears in your rear view mirror.
(But stay away from wet grass....chit eatin' grins get painful after a while)

There are even times with 4x3 isn't enough.
Their is a mound of dirt in my back yard that I was going over to test my 4x4.
I was in 4Lo so front and back diffs should be locked.
The front where locked and both pulling, I found out the rear diff wasn't locking because I got stuck and only 1 back tire was spinning.
Fixed the vacuum line, tried going over the dirt pill again and was successful.
Even 4x3 can have its limitations.
Having a locker in the rear for 4x2 is a heck of a lot better then not. Cause really, a 4x2 without a locker is really just a 4x1. Same thing for a 4x4 system without lockers. Yeah, 4 tires CAN get power, but only 2 WILL get power.
Though their are AWD systems out there that don't need lockers and get get through that coarse as AWD systems are getting computer smart, but still can be lacking at times.

I remember reading an article in Outdoor Life Magazine years ago and the author's comment was "4X4 just gets u stuck deeper in the woods". I thought that was funny. He followed up with "I won't get off pavement without a winch". Guess he liked increasing his odds of getting back home at the end of the day.
Even 4 axles having torque applied is no guarantee........of not slipping.........on wet grass........on a severe incline.......got traction?

So after reading all the replies ( which resulted very informative) I decided to buy the locker.
What are the specs for the locker, the only thing I need to search for a Dana 35 one? What about the splines and else ? I have a 1999 2wd Cherokee.
