You really don't have a fuel filter, It's more like a screen and it is part of the fuel pump assembly inside the fuel tank.

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think that you can get the screen separately. I think it will only come with the pump assembly. I did check a few sites that I use to find parts and the only come with the pump assembly.

Thanks RTorrez1! I've wanted to replace the entire fuel pump assembly since purchasing my rig, but budget wise decided to start with a tune up. sounds like that should be pretty easy anyway (without a distributor and wires and such). Guess I'd better shoot for the pump assembly before switching injectors as well. appreciate it man.

Not a problem.
BTW, Do yourself a big favor and stay away from the Airtex brand of fuel pump, They are garbage and have the tendency of failing prematurely. Your best bet would to go with a Bosch first then a Carter. Those are a little more but well worth the money and save the headache of have to drop the tank a second time to replace a bad pump. Keep us updated and let us know how everything works out for you.

Agree. It's not easy, simple, quick or cheap.

If it works, leave it alone. Think of something else to play with.

Replace the fuel pump assembly only when it fails the pressure or volume testing or when a combination of testing and symptoms point to it.

The fuel pressure spec for the 2000 XJ is 49 psi, plus or minus 5 psi. You can often rent a fuel pressure gauge from your local parts store very inexpensively and it's very easy to test it. If it passes the pressure test and you have driveability symptoms, the problem likely lies elsewhere.

If you are having symptoms, detail them here for comment.

I think that it needs a new one anyways. Starts hard (have to do the 'ol 5 second ignition routine), plus my fuel gauge doesn't work, so I'm guessing that the sending unit is shot, or float maybe. either way. I was planning on buying a modestly priced assembly and putting a bosch pump on it.

I will rent a fuel pressure gauge first though, Thanks for the advice!
