I'm going to take a look at a 2000 grand cherokee with a transfer case stuck in 2 wheel drive. Does anyone here have an idea as to which transfer case that would be? If not, how
can I determine which it is?

 

There should be a circular tag on the transfer case with the model number.

You might have better advice and answers in the grand cherokee section. The 2000 GC is completely different from the regular XJ. The transfer cases used in a 00 GC were never available in the XJ.

More than likely it's an NP242. The 2000+ is specific because it has no speedo gear in it because that function is taken care of in the transmission. For replacement, you can use an older one however, as long as the input spline count is the same. AFAIK the only other t/case in the 2000 Grand is the NP247 which has no 2wd option. A good way to tell if it's a 242 is the rear driveshaft fits on a long output shaft with a rubber boot over it. OR read the tag! LOL!

The t/case shifts by cable, but the end of the cable fits right over the t/case shift lever. You may need to keep the shift lever from the old one if you use a different 242 that has a hole in the lever for a rod. The 2000 has a shaft on it that the cable end slips over with a locking clip. An ordinary 1/4" C-clip works if the original clip is broken or missing. You can plug the speedo sensor hole or just leave it on.

 

If it has 2wd then it's the np242
