Last winter while turning tight left in my parking garage I would hear noise from the front of my 2000 grand cherokee. I figured that it was the front axle clicking, because it sounded like an axle click. Well the truck was parked till last week when I pulled her out. As I backed her out to take off, I could hear the clicking noise even when going straight. Now here is the odd part, it doesn't do it till she is driven about 1/2 mile and it's intermittent. I immediately took her back home and looked up front. I saw the front right axle boot was split, but after listening very close, the noise was not coming from the axle. I drove her to my buddies shop because he has a lift. After putting it in the air I was able to hear more precisely where the clicking noise was coming from. It was closer to where the front drive shaft was going into the transfer case. Is this actually called a drive shaft since it doesn't have ujoints like the rear drive shaft?

Yes, it's the drive shaft. It just has CV joints rather then u-joints. With a split boot, the grease is probably gone and water has invaded the joint and ruined it.

When my customers have issues with the front shaft I have the driveshaft shop replace the CV style end with a std u-joint and companion flange to keep it from happening again.
