Does it stall/die when you come to a stop and let your foot off teh gas, or does it do it even when you are at cruising speed?

If it only does it when you let off the gas at low vehicle speeds (like under 5 MPH) your most likely culprit is the IAC (Idle Air Controller). Most often, they can be removed and cleaned (along with the throttle body) then reinstalled and you're good to go. Replacements are about $70-$90 at your local O'Reilly, NAPA, or VatoZone. www.rockauto.com is a bit cheaper at $36-$62.

Can you elaborate on "Just dies"? Literally just stops as if you pulled the key? Or like its running out of gas or air or something. In addition to what macgyver35 wrote this can be a symptom of a dying CPS. Have any trouble starting?

my 99 was doing this awhile ago too. My iac and all that you mentioned were replaced to. then i started going through all the grounds. that didn't work either.

I finally unpluged the main harness from the cpu under the hood and cleand the pins with electric contact cleaner and used dielectric grease on all the contacts and it hasn't done it since. nock on wood..lol. just make sure you disconnect the battery before doing this. its been almost 6 months now and now issues at all.
good luck.

Very good advice above. If the stall only happens at idle, I'd load test the battery and clean the throttle body and idle air control.

If it stalls at higher speeds under throttle, the #1 suspect is your crankshaft position sensor. If you buy one, do yourself a favor and buy a Mopar unit directly from Jeep. Aftermarket crank sensors are "hit and miss" with a lot of miss.

BTW, you have a 99 which doesn't have an ignition control module; that went away after 1990. What part did you replace?

First I replaced switch in steering column that connects to key switch and it stalls when going full speed can be running 45-60 and it like it runs out of gas I can put. It in neutral at 45 or whatever speed and it starts. Right back up I recently had trouble with it dying and had no spark which led me to coil found crack in that so replaced it

Crankshaft position sensor is a primary suspect. It is the most common engine management sensor fail on the Jeep 4.0 engine.

The crankshaft position sensor is located on the transmission bell-housing. From under the hood, looking from the front of the motor back toward the bell-housing, it will be at the 1 o'clock position. It is held in by two bolts with their heads facing toward the back of the XJ. They can be a real PITA to replace, unless you have skinny arms and small hands and can get up in there. I have Popeye arms and bear paws, so I had to use about 4 feet of extension from behind the t-case to get to it.

I'll absolutely second the advice that you should get your replacement at a Jeep dealership, or at least make sure it is an original Mopar part. I got one at NAPA for $79 and it was bad right out of the box. So, another two hours pulling that one out and putting in one from Mopar ($115 at local jeep dealer). No issues since.

Just do a search for replace CPS and you'll get an education.

Look down the backside of the motor next to the firewall and you'll see it on the bellhousing.
