Unhappy 1998 cherokee transmission issue ????

When i start it up there is no unusual noise from the trans. Take a ride in vehicle and when i stop I get a very noticeable high pitch whine. Shut off vehicle then immediately restart and there is no whine please help.. automatic 4x4

What tells you that the whine comes from the tranny?

Well the only things that turn in the tranny when you are at a stand are torque converter and atf pump.
It might be a fluid circulation sound, maybe a clogged atf screen or some kind of restriction in the fluid lines.
Did you check the level?

Default manual or automatic?

Hey you also might want to check and see if you have a pinched cooler line. I have seen this happen even with a daily driver. If I remember what automatics are like ( manuals rock!) your cooler lines should run on the passengers side of the vehicle.
