Default 1998 cherokee cruise

very strange issue. I bought this cherokee about 6 months ago. The cruise never worked. So i am fixing it up and decided i would see if we could get the cruise control to work. We replaced the clock spring and that made it at least light up on the dash but still nothing. My friend who works as a mechanic checked the pcm and it said no cruise control, like it doesnt have cruise. Has anyone heard of anything like this? He thinks possible it could added somehow but we arent sure so i thought i would reach out to the group

There are more connections than just the clock spring. Have you checked fuses and the servo out under the hood?

Have you tried pushing the SET button? Probably sounds dumb on my part but I thought the cruise on my 98 didn't work. I pushed the cruise button and the light came on but it wouldn't cruise. I messed with it one day while driving I hit the set button and it came right on

If you tried that then have you checked the vacuum line?

Yes checked all vacuum lines and tried the set thing. I just assume if the pcm isnt recognizing the vehicle as having cruise there has to be a way to add it.

hmm something else that comes to mind is the buttons themselves i know 97-98 had different signals or something than the 99-01 buttons and they dont work if you dont have the right buttons for the year. so you need to source a 97-98 button thingy. This is if im correct with the years lol.

did you check the one-way check valve in the vacuum line? It should be where it connect to the back of the intake manifold. Mine was bad

That is what I read. Something about ohms. Going to assume you bought a cruise control clockspring. "My friend who works as a mechanic checked the pcm and it said no cruise control, like it doesnt have cruise". Don't really understand that statement. As far as the PCM goes it does not matter for cruise. Installing cruise control in a Jeep that did not come from the factory with it is literally plug and play once you have all the parts. I did it in my '00. So maybe he meant the Jeep itself did not have cruise originally? You could look up your build sheet.

Which could lead us back to the switches if somebody did install it. I see Ebay postings all the time that are selling cruise control switches stating '97 to '01. I am not positive that it matters but pretty sure.

Yes, please tell us more about that.

From what you've said, this is an electronic problem. I would not spend any time checking the vacuum system just yet.
