If it's the 4.0 you're golden for a few more hundred thousand as long as you take care of it. There's people with over 300k on their engines without ever rebuilding them. I'm at 220k and i got no issues.Originally Posted by TITAN_4X4_GUY

Im looking into buying a 1989 Jeep Wagoneer. 4.0l with 179k on it. Looks great in good condition. How long do these motors run? It will be my daily driver. Anything I should look for?
You might see if there is oil in the air cleaner from excessive blow by. Really a wet/dry compression test would be ideal. Looking at the plugs might tell you something. Any black/ugly? Originally Posted by TITAN_4X4_GUY

I'm running smoother and stronger than ever with 272K on my 90 by the way.

(I got smarter as the Jeep got older)
I'm going to put it up on the lift tomorrow and check it over. The guy wants 1700 with new tires, new exhaust, new slave cylinder, new brakes. 179k miles. What y'all think about the price? I added a quick picture on my profile

If it still looks good once your able to get a good look at it go for it. I'm really enjoyin mine. I would try for less than 1700 but either way good luck.

If its not rusty it's worth the 1700 they have gone for 3k plus without rust and they are pretty rare nowadays just what I have seenOriginally Posted by TITAN_4X4_GUY

You might look for cracks at the upper corner by the hatch hinge. Leaking there really had me goen! (rail there fed it). Parked twisted, my hatch will hit the tail-light. Check the doors by lifting. Play in the hinge pins?
Just ammo for "negotiating". Be sure he is right there when you "find" the worn hinge pins!
