Default 1989 RMS

I need an RMS for my '89 Renix 4.0L but I've been told there are two kinds of RMS (1 groove and 2 groove?) and I have no idea which of those I need. Anybody have a definitive answer?

Single and Dual lip.. the idea is the dual lip moves the lip from the groove that gets worn into the crankshaft as the RMS hardens.

Get the Fel-Pro dual lip seal.. always the better choice.

Oh, and before I'm accused of jumping on the RMS bandwagon, here's what I've done to remedy this silly oil drip, thus far:

-Replaced vacuum harness including CCV elbow and orifice grommet

-Replaced oil cap with NAPA

-Added secondary rubber seal to NAPA oil cap (per Cruiser54's instructions)

-Replaced valve cover gasket with Fel-Pro Blue and confirmed torque (55 in/lb) on each bolt, including those near the firewall.

-Replaced oil pressure sending unit when I replaced my cluster. No leaking oil in that area.

-Scrubbed grime from block around oil filter and distributor when I upgraded grounds over a year ago. There are no signs of escaping oil in that area.

Thank you very much, I'm on my way to NAPA.

Just be sure....Gotta watch around that adapter right away after cleaning around it. Btw, I returned the rear main seal and pan gasket I'd bought from Napa after I found crank-case pressure was the cause of my RM leak. (I had done something goofy preventing my front VC vent from venting freely).

Good luck, I hope that nails it. In the "Old Days", a crank might move over, (down) from wear, causing the RM to not seat. A used car dealer would then change it so it stopped leaking long enough to sell it. I don't doubt things are different now...it might be just old.

Fortunately, the cleaning took place about a year ago and it's remained leak free since then. It could just be the oil pan gasket but as long as I'm doing that, I might as well replace the RMS... like most everything else in there, it's 25 years old.

You know, I'm not really sure where I picked that up. Probably over on Pirate or something

Anyhoo, it's too long for a vanity plate but I thought it was clever and am considering having a bumper sticker made.

Or maybe I'll rename my Jeep to The RMS Bandwagon™
