1989 cherokee whats the difference
I've owned one 89 cherokee and it was great. Whats the difference in motors. 4.0 and say a 92 4.0. Looking to another cherokee and want to know if I should be looking at a 89 or am I just being weird. Want to use this one as a exploring the back woods kind of rig.
Mechanically? Rather little.
In terms of engine management, search up "RENIX" here and pillage through the results.
For the 6-242:
1987-1990 = RENIX
1991-1995 = OBD-I
1996-2006 = OBD-II
The 6-242 ended regular production at the end of the 2006 model year.

The 91(?) and earlier were RENIX, so different electronically than the 92 and later. This means that the FI won't swap over, cooling systems are different (open vs closed), etc. The RENIX were rated 170hp while the 4.0L HO were rated 190hp or higher depending upon year.
The 92 no longer has Comfort/Power mode selector for the AW4 trans, and doesn't have the vacuum motor disconnect on the RH side of the front axle.

RENIX- more vacuum lines, more complicated system, close cooling system, vac disco front diff, less horsepower
HO-less vacuum lines, simpler system, open cooling system. non disco front diff, more horsepower.
You can correct the cooling, diff and HP, but you put a lot of time and $$$$$$ into an Renix XJ when you can buy an HO model that already has those things for the same price. (at least in my market anyway) And that time and money could be spent on other upgrades

I have put in time but not that much money. I've eliminated a lot of vacuum lines got a non disco axle and performance mods are not that hard.+ the computer will take anything I can throw at it.

I'd leave a RENIX the way it came.
I'd also leave a '91 and later HO the way it came.
You will save yourself a lot of time, money, and frustration.
In other words, buy whichever one you want to; but leave the powertrains as they came.

The renix is every bit as good as the H.O. as far as reliability is concerned. Yeah it has more vac lines then a h.o. However the vacuum system on the renix is simple and reliable. Yeah it has less hp, but if maintained and with a few simple mods you can keep up with the H.O's all day long. In fact after i got my renix rebuilt and slapped on some 703 neon injectors, i have left my friends 2003 wrangler, a 2001 and a 1996 cherokee with the h.o.'s, in the dust. Yeah the cooling system can be a pain, but with a good pressure bottle it's just fine, and if there is still a problem then it can be easily converted to a H.O. Cooling system. Is the H.O. System better, yeah, but in the renix's defense it's still a dang good motor. I have a renix and I love it, it has it's little quarks sometimes, but it has never left me stranded or given me any problems. I have also heard from several machine shops that the lower end on a renix is better. Plus with mine I am getting 19-20 mpgs so im not complaining haha. overall the H.O. Is better in some ways, but the renix is still a fantastic motor, and still just as reliable!
