Question '01 XJ Axle info needed

Hi there,

I'am new here and I own a 2001 Cherokee XJ 4.0l Automatic. I wanted to install an Eaton rear locker (E-Locker) but first i need to know some important Axle info, how can I know what Spline my Cherokee has? Take a look at the following pics that I took last week.

I believe its a Dana 35, right? I also rotated one of the rear wheels while the vehicle is lifted on a jack and found out that the other wheel also turned for the same direction, does that mean it is an LSD diff?

Please help!

Thanks a lot

chrysler 8.25. you can tell by the flat part of the bottom of the housing. i believe yours is 29 spline. take off the diff cover and take another pic. ill be able to tell you if you have an open or lsd

You think so..., If I installed the E-locker what kind of diff oil should I use?

I will try to take a pic with the cover removed.

As mentioned you are looking at a Chrysler 8.25 axle. If it is factory, then it is a 29-spline variant (earlier models had a 27-spline flavor). Because both your wheels were rotating in the SAME direction when elevated, you DO in fact have an LSD rear end. Again, if factory, its most likely a 29-Spline 8.25 LSD rear end with 3.55 gears. Congrats!

8.25/29 spline, lsd friction adivitive.A word for the wise seeming you don't even know what rear end you have ,have someone else install your locker if you still do it. A haynes manual is only 20 bucks also. they help, and the search function on here has great info, I use it all the time hint,hint.g/l---------------------------------------------------Name: XJ_diff_covers.jpg

Pull off the differential cover and take a picture, as suggested before. Plus, you're probably due for some new gear oil in there anyways

Eaton does not offer an E-Locker for the Chrysler 8.25" axle.
