Default 01 XJ AC on defrost

Is the reason my AC is only coming out of my defrost because I have a bad heater core and bypassed it? My heater core is broken and I need to replace it. My mechanic just bypassed it for the time being.

Is that why my AC is only coming out of the defrost? Or is it something else.

I DO NOT HAVE A VACUUM LEAK. Please do not suggest it. That seems to be the only thing that is suggested on here about this issue lol. My hoses are fine all the way from the vacume ball to the mode selector that black hose is sucking. No holes in that line at all. It is 100 percent something else.

Thanks.

A vacuum leak is not the only thing that is suggested it's just usually the issue so it gets suggested first and most often.

There are a handful of other things that it could be. Like the selector ****/controller itself. Or the controller on the actual HVAC unit

Hopefully it is an easy fix whatever the problem turns out to be. This kind of thing can be a nightmare to deal with

it’s been, been going on forever now. I think it may have to do with the defrost door being stuck open at this point .

If you're sure the vacuum lines are all fine, try the blend door actuator. It could be broken. That controls the direction of the air flow.

that controls the heat and cold mode switch, not the one I’m talking about. I switched that out already.

Where would this blend door actuator be at? My A/C is coming out of the regular vents, but my heat only comes from the floor...... And defrost works as advertised on HOT or COLD. Not trying to hijack the thread, but since we are talking about blend doors....

  • Blend door actuator is on the passenger side under the dash. It’s closer to the middle of the jeep than the door. Stick your head the glove box and look up towards middle of jeep and you’ll see it. On my 01 XJ all it did was work the hot/cold mode selector. When turning it manually by hand I could hear it switch over when moving the dial from hot to cold. It didn’t solve my defrost issue.

So if its just the hot/cold selector, it may not fix my problem.

Which is heat only coming out from the floor....

I doubt it, it didn’t fix mine. My issues is it is only blowing out the defrosters

Look all the way to the right of the heater box. There is the black diaphragm that the lines run to. That is what controls where the air comes out of. See if it moves when you switch vent locations. Should be by the gas pedal but up higher.

on the right of the heater box? Not 100 percent sure what the heater box is but I’ll look. And I’ll be able to see the heater box by looking under my steering wheel? I won’t have to remove anything ?

I am sure I didnt use the correct term for "heater box" but its the entire thing I posted a picture of. You can see the valve all the way to the right in the picture.

You should be able to poke your head under the dash, look up around where the gas pedal is and see the valve I am talking about.

Ended up being the mode switch dial. That’s all. NO VACUUM ISSUE AT ALL.
