I listened to y'all and talked it through with my master mechanic friend last night. Though I bought it new I don't have a lot of sentimental attachment to it. In fact I have wanted a newer car with working AC for a loooooong time. . I am lucky to live where I can walk or bus to most everything so I am not in a rush to do anything. I am having it towed home today and will list it on craisglist or ebay. The neighbors will let me put it on the end of our shared dead end for now.
There is no rust, the body is straight, it's the LTD version with leather interior plus towing and winter packages ~180k on the odo. Do you think I can get $1000 out of it?

Best thing to do is go on Craigslist. See what you see as far as XJ Jeeps go. What kind of condition you see and the asking price. Maybe there will be a couple people from around there on here who could answer that question too. I poked around in the Washington section on Craigslist for a bit. From what I have seen $1000 might fly. Some of the Jeeps looked a little pricey but were built up to one degree or another. Now just cause the ask "X" amount of dollars does not mean they are getting it. Guessing yours is still stock. To me that is a plus. Some people would disagree. You get somebody who does there own work they might get a running Jeep out of the deal for $1600. If the body is in good shape along with the interior it would be worth it for them to fix.

I think you made the right decision to sell vs take the risk and cost to repair it. If it was in the Midwest with no rust and I knew the piston associated with the broken valve was not damaged I would easily give you $1500, maybe a little more. I would do the repair myself and it would be easily worth a minimum of $3k and probably more than $4k. If it needs an engine swap or major repair I would pass but others will be interested. Someone who is looking to do performance upgrades would love to find this one. It sounds like you do not urgently need to sell so I would list it at $1k or best offer "as is" and full disclosure on what is known for certain – broken valve spring, missing valve retainer on one valve and one bent push rod. Wait for the right buyer but I don't think it will take too long. The more photos and documentation you have on body and interior condition and maintenance records the better. If you have the original window sticker or bill of sale even better to brag about when listing it for sale. A documented one owner Cherokee with a rust free body is becoming rare.
Values on XJ Cherokees are definitely going up. Excellent, original condition Cherokees with low mileage are frequently going for over $10k on collector car auction web site bringatrailer.com. In December a basic configuration 2000 with 133k miles located in Oregon sold for $8,850. It had cloth seats but excellent body and paint.
Best wishes on getting some value out of the unfortunate situation.

Just saw your photo - it looks nice from one picture. You might post a couple of additonal photos of it here. $1k no problem from what i see. Very possibly more. There is a For Sale section on this website. You might also look at listing it there in addition to others. It will get some attention and feedback on what it might be worth.

I would fix it, you can get a good engine on e-Bay for $600 to 800,Maybe cheaper at a local junkyard, I rebuilt mine for $650 , A machine shop can do the head work around $150- 200. If that's all you need it will be a good investment, I would suggest a timing chain , Lifters and maybe a cam, Also needless to say oil pump & rear main seal, Plus with all new gaskets no leaks. Your call, but it's worth more than 1k.

You want to see what salt does to jeeps in the northeast? I just bought this 2000 Sport with 125K miles on it for $700. The frame needed welding in 3 places!

My '00, I am also in the northeast, is no where near that bad. I do have some rot under the passenger side rear fender flare. But nothing crazy. You can't see it yet. And the fender flare is still secure. Both passenger side doors are rough on the bottom. Inside lip is pretty much toast but no holes. Rockers, floor pans etc are pretty solid. Will know better when I get around to ripping out the carpet to sound deaden the floor. Was a good amount of surface rust on the hood and roof which my body guy did take care of for me. But also I paid twice as much as you.

Well the history of mine is it was used in the Adirondacks for winter driving, then sat outside all summer without being washed or driven. Pretty much abused. If it was as immaculate as Katherinego's I'd have had to pay over 4k for it. I wanted a project jeep, but it needed more than I bargained for. Wheels, tires, brakes, and frame welding, I now have about 2k in it. Engine and trans are perfect! Oh, 0331 time bomb.
