Default whats knocking!?!?!?! trans, tcase, axle?

I was in a hole this morning and went to climb out in 4 high and it was pulling and then the front tires stopped and it started clicking really loud. apply the break and everything stopped turning. press gas and the front wheels would bite for a second, but then something would give and just start clicking really loud again. im not a mechanic at all, but im thinking 1 of the 3. hopefully not more or all 3 lol. transmission, tcase or front axle (differential?)

anyone have any ideas?

You don't have a vacuum disconnect on your axle. You can rule that out.

ok cool thanks. first jeep and only had in about 2 months. A buddy with a wrangler had suggested that was my problem. gonna lay beside it while the wifes drives slowly and see if i can determine where the clicking is coming from

awesome thanks for the input. in your opinions, what is the best way to go about it if it is the diff. Im assuming its got the dana 30 or 35, i cant remember what xj's are supposed to come with.

should i try to rebuild the one thats in the jeep and if so can you tell of any kits and sites to buy from.

or should i scrap it and get a better front axle

thanks again

the front is a d30. to me it sounds like the pinion gear or sumwhere along that line since your tires still turn fine until it disengages again....but definitly check that out first before you junk it.
