Default Drive Side Front Noise

Hey guys,

I am getting a intermittent squeaking noise after 25mph. It sounds similar to a squeak plate for a brake pad. It will happen accelerating, decelerating, coasting, brakes or no brakes. You can sometimes faintly hear it under 25mph.

The brakes pads are good. Look about 3/8" both sides. There is no up/down play in the tire/wheel (was thinking bearing) The axle u joint had no play in it. I have greased the front end 500 miles back from an oil change. It doesnt pull like a caliper is sticking.

Any thoughts? If it is a start replacing random parts, where would you start first? 3" RC Lift coming this friday, just an fyi to keep in mind.

Bigman, heard it yesterday when we met up the first time. He might add anything I missed.

You did your homework first, that is for sure. I would look a bit closer at the bearings. I know you checked for play already, but that still seems to be something to look at again. Take the wheel off and really listen for grinding and check for even a little play in it.

could be the brake pads. You might try roughing them up then see if noise goes away.

@fisher thanks. I try not to ask the same question that gets asked a million times, my mechanical sense isnt too bad. If i can read about it, I can do it. Might be slow the first time around. lol.

I spun the assembly with the tire off, tried to do it as fast as possible, and it didnt sound abnormal to me. I always thought and bigman thought also, that a bearing roars. not squeak. The hub assembly is like $60 a piece @ napa. Not too painful. And I watched this
doesnt look too bad.

would you lean more towards the bearing first, instead of the u joint?

@chill I have never heard of roughing a pad up, are talking wire brush or what?

Ive heard both sounds can come from a bad bearing. I know mine sorta squeaked/chirped at higher speeds, but i had to have the windows down and be driving next to the woods to hear the sound bouncing back enough for me to notice. It could very well be a ujoint too, I just dont have the experience to know what that sounds like, or how to check it if there is no play.

you can hear this windows up, with no problem. Ill just turn the radio up and wait for it to break.

I just dont wanna also groove my axle shaft it it is that bearing.

I guess if it is one or the other, the hub has to come off to get to the u joints. Just buy it all and return one or the other. Maybe.

Oh forgot to mention 117k miles on the thing.

Yeah and if I were you, give the forum a little more time to respond before throwing parts at it. Then if you have to, do the cheaper part first

picking a hub assembly up tomorrow for $60. Gonna throw that at it on friday to see if that takes care of the noise, while we are doing the lift.

sidenote: The wife has the jeep at work right now. Is it correct that if you have the 8.25 rear you do not have abs? found that on a search but wanted to check.

Thanks for the heads up, if it wasn't 2 days away I'd check it out. I am only replacing the driver side to see if it fixes the noise. I replace the passenger side shortly. Might order then.

Can anyone verify the no abs on a 8.25 or is it a myth?

I cant remember if there is any truth to that or not about the abs but take a look at your front shafts if you see a bunch of teeth on a ring goin around the shaft right near the u joint then u have abs. That is the tone ring. If you dont see those teeth then u dont have abs
