Default Softer bump stops

Alright boys I'm too broke for air bumps and have been running 3" of hockey pucks in front springs along with my acos spring adjusters with the stop on it. I'm at 3.5" lift with 31" tires. I'm pretty sure our front spring I'd is 4 inches and I've been eyeing a cheap alternative to the hockey pucks that's a Lil softer of a hit if and when I whack them. I noticed the Tacoma has some cheap options that are 3" diameter and about 3-4" tall that are listed as polyurethane "air springs" look similar to sumo springs if your familiar. Even have bolt on bottom so I can bolt to spring perch. Anyone ran something similar? For 40 bucks I'm gonna try um out.

Those hockey pucks are notoriously harsh — a lot of guys hate the stiff hit on a 3.5" lifted XJ.The Tacoma poly “air springs” / Sumo-style bumps you’re looking at for ~$40 are a solid cheap try. They’re softer and more progressive than solid pucks. Just make sure they fit your ~4" spring ID and bolt up cleanly to the perch.

That's a good idea. They look exactly like sumo springs. In fact they have the same part number as sumo springs.

I have sumo springs on my motorhome. I found that if the sumo is too tall it can be easily cut to length with a saw or bread knife.

I just installed 2" of hockey pucks in my '98 XJ. They seem to be adequate .

I'm in the process of trying new front springs, and I have a set of bump stops similar to those arriving today. The ones you bought appear to be SumoSpring knockoffs. I thought I read some reviews indicating the knockoffs didn't work well, so let us know what you find.

I bought Energy Suspension brand which have a hole in the middle, allowing them to be through-bolted to the bumpstop mounting point like hockey pucks:

Amazon Amazon

The product description indicates they are made from a compressible material, probably polyurethane sponge.

I found some timbren bumps in the junkyard off a Ford pickup, they were a nice score- way cheaper than new price. I have them in the rear and coupled with my factory style uppers they contact nice.

If you found an application where they could fit inside the coil and mount similarily like id imagine you did your pucks, you may have a winning combo

The Energy Suspension bump stops turned out to be a poor choice. They are hard urethane and too small diameter.

Now I'm curious to hear about the quality of those faux Sumosprings.

To install the hockey pucks you must remove the front springs and drill and tap a hole in the lower spring perch.

Then you put the hockey pucks inside the coil spring and install the spring with the hockey pucks loose inside the spring. After the spring is in place you have to manipulate the pucks into position, get the bolt through the pucks and started into the threads in the hole.

This is the amount of down travel I have before the bump stop contacts the hockey pucks:

Before the hockey pucks the front springs would coil bind about the same time as the upper bushings were completely destroyed. In addition, the top of the tire would contact the plastic fender liner just enough to make a noise and make a slight mark on the plastic. Since then, no coil binding, no bushings destroyed, no noises and marks on the fender liner. I will note that it occasionally bottoms out on the bump stops. The landing is a little more abrupt than before.

I think installing Timbrens or Sumo Springs would be similar. The have the bolt integrated into the device. You would still have to remove the spring and drill and tap a hole in the springs perch. I don't think it is relevant how 'springy' the Sumo Springs are in this application. The hockey pucks are solid as a rock and work great.

There are multiple videos on YouTube that show the steps to do this. Here is one example:

This video has some foolishness in it but the actions are accurate.

Note that in this case a nut was installed on the back of the spring perch. Maybe this is a good ideal. I didn't put a nut on mine, I did put a little Loctite Red on the threads.

Cute video. I also tapped the bump stop mount on the axle rather than run a bolt through the mount and use a nut.

I picked up a pair of the faux SumoSprings to evaluate. The ones on Amazon are pretty decent quality. They are more compliant than urethane, but are still pretty firm. I weigh close to 200 lbs, and if I step on one, it compresses maybe 1/8". That's an effective spring rate of about 1500 lbs/in. So more compliant than a hockey puck, but I'm not sure its a meaningful amount of compliance for the purpose they serve. They are a full 3" diameter like hockey pucks. Overall, I think they are a good choice if adding bump stops for the first time. Not sure if they are worth it for replacing hockey pucks.
