Got a notification my local "U Pull it" yard had a XJ, so I drove up to take a look. It was a 98 XJ, 2 wheel drive that mechanically appeared to have grated the PO's last nerve. as there were a hand full of sensors still in the box, an air filter in the box and a blue felpro oil pan gasket with the plastic gasket guides/keepers! I decided to bring home the air filter, pan gasket, and the full size console home with me. My 96 did not come with a full console. On the build sheet it is called a "mini console" which are just cover plates for the shifter the transfer case lever and the hand brake. The console will need to be cleaned up and fitted with a aftermarket bracket to hold it but will be a nice option to have! Oh yeah, there was a after market repair paper manual in the haul. All for the ghastly total of $31 and change. Wish I could find some good looking front corner lights for my 1996 and I would really be happy!

Today I finished installing a full set of core4x4 cruise control arms. I was beginning to notice some strange noises and squirrely steering under hard braking, and both symptoms are now gone!

A little while ago my exhaust broke behind the muffler and the muffler rotted out too. Same thing every few years. So this time I tried a Walker stainless muffler and new pipe. Painted the exposed welds on the pipe and muffler with hi temp paint first. See how long it lasts now.

While I was at it, one of the parking brake cables had rusted in half and was flopping against the exhaust. So I cut off both cables near each end. Pretty common to do around here.

Had -13F a couple days ago and it was slow cranking but it started. Was kinda worried since working on it last summer I didn’t latch the tailgate for a few days and drained the battery super dead. I had bought a jump starter last weekend since I knew the cold was coming. Probably wouldn’t have started if I hadn’t done that.

Leaking axle shaft seal, got a little squirrelly with the angle grinder and old bearings.

Speedi Sleeve installed, interesting they recommend filling any grooves with jb weld but also sealant on the inside.

New setup for removing bearings.

Finally had time to find the leak that kept the driver's side floor wet. Pulled back the carpet and there is some sound deadner mat that is more toward the front and spotted some rust beside some seam sealer. Poured water around the wiper arms/vent area and found the leak under that seam sealer. Apparently it is where the floor pan meets the fire wall. I poked a screwdriver through it and then had to remove the front left wheel and pull back the inner plastic fender to get access to it. Used a angle grinder to clean it all up and a old piece of quarter panel to make my patch with. Welded it in, of course had to grind down some of my welds (I may own a welding machine, but I am not a welder!) Sprayed it with primer, then when dry sprayed it with undercoating. Drying the carpet out tonight to reinstall tomorrow. While I was at it I pulled the wiper access panel, painted the wiper arms, and the panel screws and put on new blades! Got a pile of parts coming in tomorrow. Maybe I will remember to get a pic or two!

So this happened last night.

Of course followed by this.

To bad the Jeep is not holding up as well as I hoped as far as rust goes and some other minor details.
Mostly some wiring.
But I look at it this way.
She turns 26 this April.
Pretty sure this June will be 15 years since I bought her.
And while I have sunk, what I consider, a fair amount of money in her, mostly upgrading things and adding factory options/dealer accessories she does not owe me a thing.

Well I made use of some parts I got in. I had ordered new park light lenses and corner light lenses as mine are 30 years old this year! Got them installed today after all my other around the house work was done. Attached are before and after pics. I think they look light years better then the old ones!

Changed the fuel filter on my XJ today. Easy job...except for the fuel running down your arms! Did some poking around to get the "lay of the land" and was surprised that the in-tank fuel filter is accessable from underneath. So when the time comes, I will have less problems with changing it.

What year did they change the location of the in-tank fuel pump from this to the one that has to have the tank dropped or cut a access hatch in the rear cargo area?

I feel ya. Not today, but Friday the 13th of Feb. Officially TMU, but I still get a kick of watching them turn over. This one is a 1986XJ.

It is easy to get out not so much fun putting it back in and getting the oring to seal just right

Well, gotta be better than if it were on top of the tank!! But I am good with the fuel pump for now. Checked and changed my brake pads and found the calipers were sticking....a big detriment to my fuel mileage. Replaced 2 calipers and now it seems to drive better, changes gears faster now that the resistence is lower. Also changed out the old brake fluid. Yesterday, changed the oil/filter and found that my persistent water leak to the drivers floor has NOT been stopped like I thought so back under the hood I go. I think it is at the panel joints under the brake booster so I will start there. I hate water leaks!
